Bhopal Then and Now

If we talk of Bhopal city from a decade ago, it was known mainly for three things; the lakes, the historical places around it and the infamous Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The capital city of Madhya Pradesh had been had a glorious past when the Great king Raja Bhoj, Mughal Nawabs and Begums ruled the region. Being a princely state, under the rule begums in 19th and 20th century gave the city its waterworks, railways, a postal system and a municipality constituted in 1907.

In the late 20th century (1984), Bhopal faced the world’s biggest industrial Disaster known as Bhopal Gas Tragedy. More than 4,000 people died leaving the citizens of Bhopal in great shock, which people are still recovering from. However, in 30 years, Bhopal has been able to develop itself in terms of natural, industrial and educational level to a great and appreciable extent. Once known only for the Gas Tragedy, gradually, Bhopal has made a place in people’s heart because of its scenic beauty, amazing lake view, greenery and a peaceful atmosphere.

Since last decade, Bhopal has able to make a tremendous commercial growth. Being the capital of the state, Bhopsl is of a more industrial temperament and contains many reputed insurance companies, banks and other financial organizations.

 Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which is the largest manufacturing and engineering enterprise in India, has its unit in Bhopal. The industrial suburb of Bhopal is Mandideep, which accommodates many plants belonging to some of the esteemed companies including Eicher, Crompton Greaves, Procter & Gamble, Larsen & Turbo, Fujitsu and HEG.

 The Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd. is planning to develop an efficient Software & Hardware Technology Park in Bhopal. Multinational companies (MNCs) such as Taurus Microsystems, Fujitsu and Genpact are supposed to set up their centers in this Technology Park.
